Half-life is useful. It is not a bedtime guarantee. This calculator estimates how much paraxanthine may remain at a time you choose, using a simple first-order elimination model and a range of plausible half-life assumptions.
Quick answer: A small 1986 study in six healthy men reported a mean paraxanthine half-life of 3.1 hours. Individual clearance can differ, so this tool also shows estimates using 2.5- and 4.5-hour assumptions. It calculates estimated amount remaining. It does not determine a safe dose time or predict whether your sleep will be affected.

What the calculator actually measures
The output is an estimated amount of unchanged paraxanthine remaining at the selected time. It is not a blood test. It does not model absorption, active metabolites, tolerance, interactions, medical conditions, pregnancy, age or the rest of your stimulant intake.
The central estimate uses the 3.1-hour mean reported by Lelo and colleagues. That study directly administered caffeine and its three primary demethylated metabolites to six healthy men on separate occasions. It found mean half-lives of 4.1 hours for caffeine and 3.1 hours for paraxanthine. Six people is useful pharmacokinetic evidence. It is not a population-wide rule.
The math
The model uses this equation:
amount remaining = starting amount × (1/2)elapsed hours ÷ half-life
For example, the central model estimates that 200mg becomes about 100mg after 3.1 hours, 50mg after 6.2 hours and 25mg after 9.3 hours. Those are mathematical estimates. They do not mean 25mg is biologically inactive or harmless to sleep. No published paraxanthine study has established a universal sleep threshold.
Why the calculator shows a range
A single decimal point can look more certain than the evidence behind it. The 2.5- and 4.5-hour cases let you see how much the answer changes when the half-life assumption changes. They are sensitivity analyses, not measured personal values.
If your result changes dramatically across the range, the honest conclusion is not that one number is correct. It is that timing uncertainty matters.

The study supports saying paraxanthine cleared somewhat faster on average in that sample. It does not support promising that paraxanthine will be gone by bedtime or will not affect sleep.
What if you also consumed caffeine?
This calculator intentionally does not combine caffeine and paraxanthine. Caffeine is active on its own and is also metabolized into paraxanthine over time. Accurately modeling both requires more than adding milligrams or subtracting an arbitrary hour from the result.

Does slower caffeine metabolism mean slower paraxanthine clearance?
Not necessarily in a predictable one-to-one way. Caffeine formation of paraxanthine and paraxanthine's subsequent metabolism are related but distinct processes. A consumer genetic label is not enough to calculate personal paraxanthine clearance.
Can paraxanthine affect sleep?
It is a stimulant and adenosine-receptor antagonist, so sleep effects are biologically plausible. Direct sleep research remains limited. A 2026 study in 14 male rowers used subjective sleep measures after 200mg and did not establish a universal cutoff time.
