How to Read an Energy Supplement Label (Third-Party Testing Checklist)
Supplement labels are designed to be read quickly and questioned rarely. Most of the useful information is in the fine print, the units, and the things a label carefully doesn't say. Here's how to read one properly — and the six things that should make you put the bottle down.
This applies to any energy supplement, ours included. The point isn't to lead you to a conclusion; it's that a reader who can evaluate a label doesn't need to trust marketing at all.
1. Find the Actual Dose of the Actual Active
Start at the supplement facts panel, not the front of the package. Find the ingredient that's supposed to do the work, and check its milligram amount against the dose used in published research. A product can contain a legitimate ingredient at a tenth of the effective dose and describe itself honestly on the front. That's the most common trick in the category.

2. Refuse Proprietary Blends
A proprietary blend gives you a list of ingredients and one combined weight. "Energy Blend 850mg" tells you nothing about how much of each thing you're getting. Federal labeling rules order ingredients by weight, so the first item dominates and the last may be a rounding error — which is exactly why the expensive, well-researched ingredient tends to appear last.
There's one legitimate reason for a proprietary blend (protecting a formulation) and one common reason (hiding underdosing). You can't tell them apart from outside, which is reason enough to skip them.
3. Check What the Testing Claim Actually Says
"Third-party tested" is unregulated language. A useful version names the lab, the batch, and what was tested for — potency, heavy metals, microbials, and for sport products, banned substances. A useless version is the phrase alone in a marketing bullet.
Ask for the certificate of analysis. A real COA lists the testing facility, a lot number that matches your bottle, and the specific assays run. If a brand can't or won't produce one, you've learned what you needed to.

5. Read the Serving Size Before the Numbers
Serving size is where labels quietly mislead. A panel showing impressive amounts "per 2 scoops" or "per 6 capsules" is describing a serving most people won't take, and a container that empties twice as fast as the price suggests. Always convert to per-day cost and per-day dose before comparing two products.

6. Watch the Other Ingredients
The "other ingredients" line is where sugar, artificial dyes, and fillers live. For gummies specifically, sugar content is the thing to check — plenty of energy gummies carry 15–20g of sugar per serving, which means the crash you're trying to avoid is baked into the delivery system.

FAQ
What does third-party tested actually mean?
An independent lab — not the brand, not the manufacturer — verified what's in the product. Good testing confirms the actives match the label and screens for heavy metals, microbes, and contaminants. The term is unregulated, so ask which lab and for what.
What is a proprietary blend and why is it a red flag?
A proprietary blend lists several ingredients under one total weight without disclosing individual amounts. It's legal, and it lets a brand include a trace of an expensive ingredient for the label while the total is mostly filler. If you can't see the dose, you can't judge the product.
How do I know if a supplement dose is effective?

What certifications should I look for?
